Waters Of Strength
The North East Monsoon seasonal rainfall of December 2023, turned into an unprecedented downpour on 17th and 18th ,with Thoothukudi recording a rainfall in excess of 90 cm in 24 hours, second highest in the Nation. The flood literally washed away villages, leaving tens of thousands marooned on rooftops, surviving on air-dropped food packets and awaiting rescue. This photo book chronicles the resilience of the Kovalam village in Tuticorin District , which was not only left waterlogged and isolated from the mainland but also witnessed the remarkable rebirth of a forgotten waterway. Local legend speaks of a time, some 70 to 100 years ago, when this canal flowed freely, only to be buried under the progress of encroaching civilization, converted into a road. The floodwaters rediscovered this ancient path, reopening a vital link for the villagers, reminding them of their enduring connection to the land and the water. After the floodwaters receded, Kovalam village was left completely stranded from the mainland, cut off from essential supplies. It was Young Indians who first approached the village, after 15 days of isolation, with much-needed freshwater supplies and other necessities, providing a lifeline to the residents in their time of need. Kovalam village stands as a vivid reminder of the urgent need for environmental stewardship and sustainable living practices. This documentation is a call to heed nature's cry and embrace a more sustainable way of life, before it's too late.
